KiwiRail says passengers involved in a level crossing collision had to complete their journey in a bus.
An Overlander passenger train collided with a milk tanker at Manunui south of Taumarunui on Thursday afternoon. The 86 people on board were travelling to Auckland.
KiwiRail spokesman Kevin Ramshaw says the locomotive pulling the passenger carriages was able to limp its way to Taumarunui before those on board were put on a bus.
He says this option involved the least delay but they were inevitably late arriving in Auckland.
Inspector Marty Parker says there are no injuries reported but the accident left some shaken.
He says the crossing has warning lights and bells but no barrier arm.
Parker says the passenger train sustained frontal damage.
