Seismologists are taking a 4.8 tremor in Wellington in their stride.
The quake was centred 20 kilometres northwest of the capital, at a depth of 40 kilometres and followed a quake of 4.3 magnitude on Friday evening at Castlepoint.
Seismologist John Ristau says while it's a larger quake, it is nothing to worry about. He says the two quakes were not related and there is no reason to suspect a major event is imminent.
Ristau says the latest quake was felt throughout the Wellington region.
