A young man who gatecrashed a barbecue for Prince William at Premier House on Monday has escaped prosecution, but won't be welcome there for the next two years.
Teenaged radio station employee Warwick Slow jumped the fence at Prime Minister John Key's Wellington residence carrying bread and sausages, and managed to mingle with guests for a few minutes while on the phone to his station before being taken aside by security and handed over to police.
The stunt angered police, who faced questions over whether their security measures were up to scratch.
Wellington area commander Inspector Peter Cowan said today police had decided against laying criminal charges, instead issuing Slow with a trespass notice in regard to Premier House for two years.
"Mr Slow has been warned for the offence of being found on property without reasonable excuse," Cowan said.
"Police accept that Mr Slow had no intention to commit any criminal offence while on the property and this was the determinative in the decision not to proceed with any charge against Mr Slow."
Key said yesterday he was comfortable with the level of security at Premier House.
He said Slow had been apprehended within minutes of turning up at the barbecue and before the prince had even arrived.
Having to take steps such as running razor wire along the top of the boundary fence would be a shame in the historic Thorndon neighbourhood, Key said.
