A baby boy born at at Auckland's North Shore Hospital is believed to be the world's first new citizen of the decade.

Baby Cameron was born at 16 minutes past midnight on New Year's Day.

Weighing in at 3.47 kilos, or seven pounds 10 ounces his mother says so far he has been getting far more sleep than her.

It's the second year in a row that North Shore Hospital has helped produce the first baby of the year.
