Supermarket giant Foodstuffs has taken quick action after a ONE News revelation that a store had ordered staff to speak only English while at work.

On Thursday, a ONE News investigation revealed that Thorndon New World had told staff they may get a warning if they break the rule.

A notice to staff was posted on the supervisor's kiosk spelling out the English language policy.

Foodstuffs has now withdrawn the notice and claimed that the notices had been issued in error by a junior manager.

They also said there would be no disciplinary action against staff for speaking foreign languages and the matter was being investigated internally.
