The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is putting in new webcams which will allow commuters to check how congested traffic is before they travel.

The new webcams will be placed along State Highway 1 in the North Island and will add to a network of cameras operating in the main centres.

NZTA's regional director Jenny Chetwynd said "the online pictures give people the opportunity to view real time conditions, avoid congestion, and to have smoother and safer journeys.

"The extra cameras will allow people to make their own decisions about when they should travel."

The cameras automatically refresh every 60 seconds and can be accessed through the NZTA website.

The new cameras will be put in at major traffic back spots at Otaki, Waiouru and Paremata, north of Porirua and all should be online within the next two weeks.
