Fresh doubt has emerged over plans to turn Auckland's Queens wharf into "party central" for the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

Auckland Mayor John Banks says if a winner of a nationwide competition to revamp the wharf can't be decided then the entire scheme may be scrapped.

Eight designs are still in the running.

Banks will meet Rugby World Cup Minister Murray McCully on Thursday to discuss the plans.
