The logo for Auckland's new super city has been unveiled.

The winning design, a stylised pohutakawa, was chosen from over 1500 entries in a public competition run by the Auckland Transition Agency.

It's the work of former commercial artist Jim Dean of Manukau, who says he was like a stunned mullet when he received the call that his design had won.

He says he ruled out Auckland's other common icons and settled on the idea of the sea and its surroundings.

The panel of big name judges which featured Waitakere mayor Bob Harvey, clothing designer Karen Walker and broadcaster Bill Ralston praised the elegance of the design.

Harvey says the logo fitted the brief of being "compelling, elegant and compact."

"It's a stunning design. We love it."

Dean recieves $10,000 and a 'Best of Auckland' prize package for his winning efforts.

The competition rules allowed designers to submit variations on a single logo design on a single sheet.

In accordance with the rules, Dean will now work with professional designers to develop finished artwork for the Auckland Council which can be used on everything from websites and signage, to legal notices and rubbish bins.

It must be suitable for reproduction at a range of sizes in printed and electronic versions in colour and black and white.

In my opinion, the new logo is not that unique. It is really similar to the old one. Since there has been a pohutukawa tree logo, they could make a logo based on Auckland's tourist attractions or anything else that represents Auckland. A very curious feeling occurred to me that Dean was not aware of the similarity between the ARC logo and the new Super City logo.Though the 7 petals represent the 7 parts of Auckland, Dean could actually do the seven petals but in a different presentation.

I think the super city logo is too similar to the ARC's logo. If you compare the super city and the Auckland Regional council Parks logo it looks like a complete copy and a waste of time and money. I am going against the idea of the new logo.

Our opinion is that this new supercity logo has been copied and remodeled. We are curious to know if Jim Dean had seen the Regional Parks logo and taken a few of its main ideas to design his own. We are aslo amazed that all Jim Dean could think of doing with the $10,000 is to buy some beer as quoted in the NZ Herold. The Regional Parks logo is more original and we are amazed that out of 1500 enteries this is the best the council could find. Matthew and Jacob Ross Intermediate school P.N.

Plagiarism is a punishable offense. The question is: do we really have no designer capable of designing an original meaningful design, or we have no one to recognise and choose a meaningful original design, or both?
