The civilian hero who helped save the lives of the police officers shot in the Napier siege has spoken out for the first time.
Hawke's Bay's golfing community has on Friday turned out in force for a fundraiser to benefit the four courageous men at the centre of the Napier siege and their families.
He may be holding a crutch rather than a club, but nothing was going to stop mystery hero Leonard Holmwood attending a golf fundraiser in his honour.
"It's just been humbling," he says of the event.
In his first interview since trying to wrestle the rifle from gunman Jan Molenaar, the Chaucer Road resident described his heroic actions in few words.
"A gun being turned on unarmed people, I just couldn't allow that sort of thing - it just wasn't right," Holmwood said.
Holmwood says he does not regret what he did that day - actions which most probably saved the lives of police officers Bruce Miller and Grant Diver.
"The bullet actually shattered my hip and made a couple of large exit wounds... they call me half-assed now because I've only got half a cheek," says Holmwood.
Meanwhile, senior club champion Miller and Officer Diver spent the day in a cart catching up with friends, giving the fundraising game a miss.
Its expected $30,000 will be raised from the tournament and auction.
The surviving trio will all receive a portion, along with the family of slain officer Len Snee.
The proud sportsman is represented on Friday by both his sons, Joe and Sam.
