A young woman has told of her "shock" at finding a flatmate was a prime suspect for the slaying of Auckland Taxi driver Hiren Mohini in Auckland in January.
The Asian man is believed to have fled to China a few days after Mohini picked him up in the inner city on January 31 and drove him to Mt Eden where Mohini was repeatedly stabbed and left to die.
An arrest warrant was issued for the wanted man on February 26 and police are negotiating with international agencies to try to find him.
One of his flatmates told The New Zealand Herald she was shocked to learn he was the prime suspect in the killing.
She says he came home one day with a badly injured leg which he says he got during a game of basketball but refused to go to a doctor, saying he needed only painkillers.
She says he was always happy and always joking.
A flatmate says he was a "very proper and very quiet" person who mainly kept to himself.
The flatmates say police called on February 19 and they stayed in a hotel while police fingerprinted and forensically examined the unit.
The wanted man told his flatmates he was travelling to China to visit his sick grandfather and flew out on February 5 with a one-way ticket.
Just before he left the country he was very withdrawn.
