New Zealand's junior male tennis player of the year has had a
rough ride on his way to begin a top tennis scholarship in
America.
On December 30, Jordan Kelly-Houston boarded a flight to Sydney,
marking the take off for a tennis career at Florida State
University.
However Jetstar cancelled his Sydney to Honolulu flight, forcing his mother, Stephanie, to pay over $1,000 to rebook connecting flights in the US.
"They just left passengers completely puzzled, ... made no apologies, took no responsibility. I don't know how they can run an airline, you know, with that," she says.
Jetstar says it is the sort of problem sorted out by insurance.
The company says: "It appears ... that there's been some criticism labelled at our airline that we are somehow now responsible for ongoing flights out of Honolulu to the States which aren't part of our booking."
Later, Stephanie Kelly says she faced a new dilemma when she called to see if the plane had left on time.
Jetstar told her that Jordan had cancelled his flight and asked for a refund. The company was adamant her son was not on board.
"I just found it diabolical ... I don't know what they thought I would do with such information," Kelly says.
She started a 13-hour search for her son, involving New Zealand and Australian police.
All the while Jordan was on the flight, oblivious to her panic.
"First thing I heard of it was the next day when I got an emergency call & to tell me that I was apparently lost," Jordan says.
Meanwhile, Jetstar says it stands by their service.
"We provided updated information to the son as respect to his new flight and our records show that in due course we provided that information to his family as well."
But Kelly says she wants compensation and an apology.
