The mother of a newborn baby girl found dead in the backyard of a Lower Hutt property has been charged with murder.
The 21-year-old Taita woman will appear in the Lower Hutt District Court tomorrow morning after she was charged earlier this evening.
Hutt Valley Inspector Shane Cotter said Police were now moving to find out the identity of the baby's father.
"The circumstances surrounding the baby girl's tragic death have been fully investigated by police," said Cotter.
"Part of the investigation has been to determine the identity of the father of this baby. We believe we know who this man is, but we are awaiting DNA results to confirm paternity."
Cotter said the mother has no connection to the residents of the Taita Drive property where the baby was found wrapped in a towel last week.
Police said the girl was about a day old and still had part of her umbilical cord attached when she was discovered.
