Much of the North Island is in for a lashing tomorrow with a large low expected to deepen west of the country and move slowly east.

The top of the north will see the first effects of the heavy rain and northeast gales and rain warnings are possible for the eastern hills of Northland, Coromandel Peninsula, Bay of Plenty and eastern Waikato near the Kaimai Range.

MetService says because the land is already saturated the rain could cause slips and surface flooding.

River levels are likely to rise and northeast winds could reach severe gale for a time in exposed parts of Northland and Auckland.

The conditions are likely to bring a prolonged period of unsettled weather to much of the country.

Heavy rain is likely in Nelson, and the far south of Fiordland and Southland later on Sunday and Monday.
