The powers of New Zealand's spy agency have been beefed up with the passing of the SIS Amendment Bill.
The regulations cover the Security Intelligence Service's ability to use warrants for activities like electronic tracking, computer surveillance, and monitoring of cellphones and cyber identities.
Dr Jim Veitch of Massey University's Centre for Defence and Security Studies said people have an antiquated view of security intelligence based on shows like the James Bond movies.
He said people need to get their ideas brought up to date because without security intelligence and its operations within New Zealand, the protection of New Zealand sovereignty will be that much further at risk.
Veitch said the changes bring New Zealand in line with the best practice of the best of the security intelligence services overseas.
