Much of the North Island is expected to get another dumping of rain today, as a slow moving low travels across the country.

MetService has issued a severe weather warning for Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Marlborough, and Nelson.

Heavy rainfall warnings are also in effect for far northern Gisborne, Canterbury and Otago.

A period of heavy rain is expected in Northland today, over the Coromandel Peninsula tonight, and in the Bay of Plenty tonight and Sunday morning.

Warnings are now also issued for Canterbury and eastern Otago for persistent rain from Sunday afternoon through until Monday night.

Over 100 mm may fall in some locations in south Canterbury and eastern Otago on top of what is already a very sodden situation due to repeated recent rain events.

Motorists are advised that streams and rivers may rise rapidly and there may be areas of local flooding and slips, especially in Canterbury and eastern Otago.
