The road through Marlborough's historic Molesworth Station is open again for the summer.

The 207-kilometre journey from Blenheim to Hanmer Springs through Molesworth opened on Monday

The journey takes about six hours, with the 59km Acheron Road section through the station taking at least two hours.

Molesworth is New Zealand's largest farm and is managed by the Department of Conservation.

The road through the station opens every summer for about three months until April 5, unless the fire risk is too great.

Station manager Jim Ward said the road yesterday was pretty quiet but traffic generally picked up in the New Year.

At this stage it was not too dry and he was hopeful the road would stay open for the foreseeable future.

There was more feed about but if it got too dry that would mean more potential fuel for a fire, he said.

The road is open from 7am to 7pm.

It is suitable for two-wheel drive vehicles but not for caravans or vehicles over seven metres long.
