A community effort has ensured Gisborne's bottlenose dolphin Moko will have minders.

The Eastland Group, the Eastland Community Trust and Waikanae Surf Lifesaving Club, with guidance from the Department of Conservation, are joining forces to make sure Moko is kept safe over the summer.

The Eastland Group and the Eastland Community Trust are financing two-person crews from the Waikanae Surf Lifesaving Club to shadow the dolphin in an IRB, seven days a week for the next five weeks.

The crews are receiving a crash course on dolphins from the Department of Conservation in readiness for their 9.00am Monday start.

DOC has also been fielding numerous calls from people wanting to be friends of Moko, and a special account has been set up by Waikanae Surf Lifesaving Club.
