There has been a moderate earthquake in Wellington on Saturday night.

It measured 4.8 on the Richter scale, was at a depth of 40 kilometres, and centred 20 kilometres northwest of Wellington.

It was felt a little after 6pm throughout the region.

A quake of 4.3 was recorded just after 5pm on Friday early evening at Castlepoint.
