There is never any guarantee but the chances of heading to the beach on Christmas Day are looking high, but anyone heading far from home should pack for all weather with a changeable week ahead.

Clean off the barbeque and crank up the gas as the potential for a good old fashioned Kiwi Christmas Day is looking good.

Mostly sunny skies and temperatures in the 20s are on the cards for most of the country.

The forecast is one of the brightest in years with many parts of the country suffering from flooding, winds and freezing temperatures during recent summer holidays.

But things are set to get worse before they get better with heavy rain and strong winds forecast for many areas early next week.

Tent erectors should take extra care in southern parts of both islands where the winds will be at their worst.

While most Aucklanders usually head to out-of-town beaches they may be better staying home as the Christmas Day forecast is looking the brightest in the City of Sails.
