The mother of missing Auckland woman Carmen Thomas is on her way home to South Africa.

Teresa Scott came to New Zealand for 12 days to help search for her 32-year-old daughter and met with police several times.

Detective Inspector Mark Benefield said Scott departed Auckland this morning.

He said it would be a long flight home as she had to leave the country without positive news of her missing daughter.

Detective Inspector Benefield said police were disappointed they haven't been able to give her some closure or genuine hope.

"We are frustrated that there haven't been any corroborated sightings of Carmen and her belongings since June 27, but we have reassured Teresa we will continue in the hunt for her daughter," she said.

"We have been frank with Teresa and have acknowledged her worst fears - that the circumstances of Carmen's disappearance are sinister."

"We're disappointed we haven't been able to give her some closure or genuine hope but there are several phases of this investigation to go and we will stay in touch with her as much as possible."

Police are still looking through a lot of CCTV footage that may help the investigation, but are still appealing for the public for help.
