Police worried about the welfare of a missing Auckland woman say there may have been a sighting of her car in the Bay of Plenty town of Waihi but the woman is still missing.

Susan O'Brien, 36, from the Auckland suburb of Three Kings, failed to turn up at work last Wednesday and police say her last communication with friends and family has led to growing concerns for her safety.

Sergeant Megan Dalton from the Balmoral police in Auckland says they are following up sightings of the woman's car in Waihi.

yesterday but have not found O'Brien or any indication of where she may be.

"We are following up sightings of the vehicle. That's all I can say," says Dalton.

"We are still looking for the whereabouts of both her and the vehicle."

Police said on Friday the woman's disappearance was out of character.

She is believed to be driving a silver Toyota Rav 4, registered number ETC964.

She is a slimly built European woman with shoulder-length dark hair and is 155cm tall.

Police say anyone who has seen her or her vehicle in the past few days should call Dalton or Constable Fred McGraw on 027 2439895.
