Two American university students who sparked a search and rescue operation today in the Arthur's Pass area have been located by police.
Alec Brown and Erica Kintworth, both 21, were reported missing last night after they failed to return from a tramping expedition.
The University of Canterbury students set off on June 1 and were expected to return between Monday and Wednesday last week.
Sergeant Sean Judd said the pair had made some good decisions, such as not crossing a river, however their preparedness and attention to the weather forecast was lax.
Judd said they had also failed to leave written intentions of there whereabouts.
The area the pair were in had heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures for several days.
