The body of missing Huntly teenager Zharian Watkins has been found in the Waikato River.

Waikato police say members of the public found the 13-year-old's body this afternoon after the official search was suspended until Wednesday.

"Zharian was found in the river adjacent to the public information office, at the north end of Huntly opposite the power station.

"The official search had been suspended but true to the community spirit shown over the weekend when dozens of people helped search the river and its banks, a number of people had kept up the search and found him, due in a large part we believe, to the low river levels," said Inspector Paul Carpenter.

Emergency services and Huntly locals have been combing the Waikato River since last Friday when Watkins jumped into the river while playing with friends.

His death has been reported to the Waikato Coroner.
