A teenager facing serious charges following a fatal car crash in Auckland who went missing from Child Youth and Family care has been found.

The 15-year-old has been charged with breaching bail conditions and dangerous driving causing death after a stolen car racing through Mt Wellington ploughed into another car early on Saturday morning, killing 22-year-old Shaun Fitzpatrick.

The teen is due in the Auckland Youth Court this week but had disappeared from a CYF supervised group home where he was under a 24-hour curfew.

CYF told ONE News the teenager was found today and they will be speaking with police.

Grant Bennett, a CYF operations general manager, said the 15-year-old "ran away" from the home on Monday afternoon.

"Child, Youth and Family had appropriate steps in place to monitor him, including round the clock supervision until his next court appearance.

"Unfortunately, there was a brief opportunity for him to abscond and he took it."

Bennett said earlier when the teen is found, he will appear in court and CYF will ask for him to be remanded to a secure residential facility.

Detective Senior Sergeant Sutton said the teen had been arrested after family members of the youth brought him to a police station.

The fatal crash

The crash happened at approximately 2.50am at the intersection of Carbine Rd and the South Eastern Highway.

Police say it appears the two vehicles were racing towards Waipuna Rd and went through a red light, "T-boning" a vehicle driving through the intersection on a green light and killing the driver.

Police earlier arrested a 17-year-old and charged him with unlawfully getting into a motor vehicle.

Another 17-year-old who was in another car the Subaru was racing will be charged with driving dangerously.

The two 17-year-olds will appear at the Auckland District Court tomorrow.

A witness described seeing a modified silver car driving at speed through the intersection moments before the fatal crash.

A second vehicle, a green Toyota Corolla or similar, was seen by a witness to stop and pick up two males walking on Carbine Rd minutes after the crash.

Police say it is possible further charges could be laid.
