The Minister of Agriculture has used a speech at the NZ Pork Industry Board Conference to remind those in the industry of the importance consumers place on animal welfare.

David Carter says recent media attention sparked by animal rights organisation SAFE caused an immediate decline in pork sales.

While pork sales have recovered, the Minister warns those at the conference, they ignore consumer concerns about the integrity of production at their peril.

Meanwhile, animal rights activists staged a protest outside the meeting.

Around 40 members of the group Save Animals from Exploitation, donned pig suits outside the conference venue.

The group claims the pork industry is supporting inhumane pig farming conditions.

Police moved protesters on after some started to scatter hay around the hotel entrance.
