A mini-tornado has damaged half a dozen homes in Warkworth, north of Auckland.

Former All White Sam Malcolmson was at home when the wind struck around 1.20pm.

He says trees and bushes started to bend in a sudden wind, there was an almighty roar then a series of bangs as tiles were torn off his roof.

Sam Malcolmson says it's left two holes in his roof, one a metre and a half wide.

It lasted 15 seconds, but left half a dozen houses damaged.

Alistair Tolmie, manager at the Warkworth information centre, says there was a huge torrential downpour, and the sky was black and heavy.

Fire communications shift manager Steve Smith says fire crews were called out to one property in Warkworth to stabilise a roof.
