Runaway millionaire Kara Hurring's mother has disappeared after reportedly leaving Blenheim to escape scrutiny.

Suzanne Hurring, who works at a hairdressing salon, has been mostly absent from both home and work since the story of her fugitive daughter broke.

Kara and her partner Leo Gao fled the country with close to $4 million, after Westpac accidentally extended their overdraft by millions.

Their service station is in receivership and has been stripped by the oil company.

Aroha Hurring, Kara's sister, followed the fugitives to Hong Kong, but after apparently living the high life for several days, took the advice from her family and headed home where she was interviewed by police on Monday.

"I would suggest to them that they take this opportunity to return to the country and resolve the issues associated with the outstanding sum of up to $3.8 million," Detective Senior Segeant David Harvey of Rotorua Police told ONE News.

Aroha told police her sister is still in Hong Kong, but that she does not know what has happened to Gao.

She was released Monday night and flew home to be with her mother.
