The first of two memorials has been held for Captain Brian Horrell, who died when an Air New Zealand Airbus plunged into the Mediterranean Sea.
He and six others were killed when the A320 was lost a fortnight ago.
Some 500 people gathered at an Auckland church on Friday to farewell Horrell.
His family say he was living the dream. Horrel's elder brother Nicol told media the service was a celebration of a wonderful life.
He says Brian always had a love for flying and was highly respected by his colleagues.
A second service will be held next week at his family home in the South Island.
Investigators speculate that it will be months before the cause of the crash will be identified.
