Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully says the loss of life in Gaza is saddening.

Israel has launched an air strike on the Gaza Strip, killing at least 225 people in the bloodiest one-day death toll in 60 years of conflict with the Palestinians.

McCully says the international community needs reliable rules to function by and it is the job of the United Nations to impose them.

In related news, the US consulate in Auckland is to be targeted in a protest against Israel's latest attacks on the Gaza Strip.

Global Peace and Justice Auckland is organising the protest, which will take place in Quay Street at 4pm on Tuesday.

The group says it's targeting the consulate because the United States has given unconditional backing to the Israeli government in these attacks.

Spokesman John Minto says the group's calling on the New Zealand government to condemn what he calls these cowardly Israeli attacks.
