A depositions hearing has opened in Wellington for former immigration department boss Mary-Anne Thompson who is facing three fraud charges.
Thompson appeared relaxed as she made her way through Wellington District Court's security system on Monday morning.
She faces a total of three charges relating to claims made in her CV when applying for senior public service jobs.
The depositions hearing ajourned for the day and will resume on Tuesday. It is set to last three days and will determine whether Thompson has a case to answer.
The scandal surrounding Mary-Anne Thompson is getting murkier with revelations the head of the public service knew about her questionable qualifications four years ago.
Thompson allegedly claimed she had a doctorate gained from the London School of Economics. It is understood she claimed to have a doctorate when she was appointed as economic adviser at the Ministry of Maori Affairs in 1990 and when she moved to the department of Prime Minister and Cabinet in 1998.
But when she applied for the Immigration Service job in 2004 the PhD wasn't mentioned.
ONE News was told by the London School of Economics that Thompson never received a PhD from its school.
