There has been a series of early morning earthquakes in Turangi and Marlborough.

Marlborough was shaken by a 4.5 magnitude earthquake.

The quake, which struck at 12.11m, was located 30km south of St Arnaud at a depth of 110km, GNS Science said.

Around the same time, two mild but shallow tremors hit Turangi just after midnight.

While they were only 2.8 and 3.6 on the Richter scale, they were at four kilometres deep and were felt by residents.
