The government is expected to soon decide on a Maori flag to fly from government buildings.

Four flags have been considered for the honour but it's believed the Tino Rangatiratanga design has already been given the nod.

Cabinet will officially decide on the flag which will be raised at government buildings and the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

Prime Minister John Key says a Maori flag will fly alongside the New Zealand flag at Premier House on Waitangi Day next year.

Key said on Monday that Maori Party co-leader Pita Sharples had made a recommendation on which Maori flag should be used.

"I'm comfortable with the recommendation he's made but I haven't taken it to Cabinet yet," he said.

Key would not say which Maori flag would be used but indicated it would be flown on more sites than before, including his official residence.
