A man has been charged with manslaughter after a 26-year-old died in police handcuffs in Hamilton last month.

Three months after Adam Rawiri Palmer was sent to prison, he was bailed, and within hours he was dead.

A 23-year-old man who has name suppression, with whom Palmer allegedly had an altercation with before his death, was originally charged with assault in relation to the death.

Detective Inspector Sue Schwalger, the officer in charge of the investigation into the death, said the decision to escalate the charge of assault to one of manslaughter was made after careful consideration of the events that occurred at the address.

Palmer's death was the subject of multiple police inquiries after he died in police handcuffs at the Dinsdale home of his former partner, Laura Marston.

"Police had gone to the address after reports of a struggle going on there between two men and on arriving found Mr Palmer being restrained by aman at that address, Schwalger said.

"Tragically Mr Palmer's physical state deteriorated and he was unable to be resuscitated and died a short time later."
