Canterbury police are hunting a man they say is dangerous after a ram raid on a pharmacy on Thursday morning.

Police converged on the Lincoln area after a reported sighting of William Alexander Stewart, 47.

Five warrants are out for Stewart's arrest and police say it is only weeks since he confronted an officer near the Rangitata River.

He is believed to be living rough in mid Canterbury and is described as being in an unkempt condition.

The vehicle used in the raid in the Christchurch suburb of Halswell was found abandoned in Wigram Road around 6am and another stolen vehicle was found in nearby Winchops Road.

A police spokesman says originally Stewart had long straggly hair but he may now have a shaven head. They are advising people not to approach him.
