A man allegedly drugged and raped a woman escort after he was given electronic bail to live at a holiday park north of Auckland.

Paulus Nieuwenhuiysen, 49, reappeared in court last week charged with stupefying and raping the 23-year-old woman after inviting her to his unit at the Waiwera Holiday Park and Thermal Pools, The New Zealand Herald reported.

Nieuwenhuiysen was living at the holiday park on electronic bail for alleged possession for supply of ecstasy, methamphetamine and cocaine last year. He was due back in Auckland District Court this week.

Roger Mac, chief financial controller for the group that owns the holiday park, told the Herald the court decision to allow Nieuwenhuiysen to live at the park was "crazy".

He says the park opposed the electronic bail application, Under the terms of his bail Nieuwenhuiysen wore an ankle bracelet and had to keep within 20m of his cabin.

He was kept separate from other guests but staff had difficulty monitoring him.
