A 35-year-old man is missing and presumed drowned after fishing from rocks at Piha Beach west of Auckland.

Surf lifeguards were alerted just before 6pm.

The man was at Dawson's Ledge at the southern end of the beach.

A large scale search is underway involving Lifeguards, emergency service personnel, a surf life saving jet ski unit from Bethells Beach, a Coastguard air patrol and Auckland's Westpac Rescue helicopter.
