Hawke's Bay police investigating a shooting near Norsewood on Sunday have named 46-year-old David John Bourke from Wanganui as a man they want to question in relation to the incident.
Police believe Bourke may have been involved in the incident, in which a police car was shot at and a farm worker injured. A body has also been found in a car believed to have been driven by Bourke.
Southern Hawke's Bay residents are being warned to stay inside locked premises, if possible, as police hunt for the gunman.
The drama began on Sunday when police received a complaint from a member of the public about bad driving. Police stopped the car about 3.45pm just north of Dannevirke and carried out a breath test, which the driver failed.
The driver then took off and police briefly gave chase before calling off the pursuit for safety reasons.
However, police came across the car, crashed, at Butcher's Creek, north of Norsewood.
"The officer approached the vehicle and a man started to get out of the vehicle carrying a firearm. The officer ran back towards his vehicle and heard the shotgun discharged," police spokesperson Kim Perks says.
"A short time later, two farm workers came across a man with a shotgun on nearby land.
"The man suggested he was hunting rabbits and was advised by the farm workers that he should not be doing so.
"As the farm workers returned to their truck, the shotgun was discharged towards them injuring one of the men in the shoulder."
The man is in hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
Perks says any suspicious activity should be reported to police immediately, and Bourke should not be approached if seen.
Bourke is described as European, 170cms tall, stocky build with short, greying hair. He is believed to be armed with a shotgun.
Perks says motorists are advised to avoid the area, and there are diversions in place.
Police also want to hear from anyone else who saw the Honda vehicle between Te Horo, on the Kapiti Coast and Norsewood earlier in the afternoon.
The car had been seen being driven erratically northbound.
The next sighting of the vehicle when the car was spotted by ,a police patrol car north of Norsewood at 3.45pm.
Anyone who has any information is asked to contact the police on 0800 808585.
