A man convicted of a murder linked to the recently quashed Rex Haig case is to be freed from jail.

Former Invercargill labourer Nigel Johnstone will be paroled at the end of the month, after serving 11 years.

Despite maintaining his innocence, Johnstone was convicted of murdering a friend who would have been a key witness at Haig's trial.

Johnstone's father says his son will probably return to Southland pending an appeal.
