A man has been killed in a car crash near Stratford this morning.

According to police, the accident occurred at 6.20am at the intersection of State Highway 3 and Climie Road.

The driver, a New Plymouth local, died at the scene. Police said that it appears that he had fallen asleep at the wheel.

Meanwhile, a woman from Wellington has been taken to hospital with "moderate injuries".

The road is closed, but diversions are in place.
