Police have named the man who was killed by a train on Lincoln Road in Christchurch last night.
He was Murray Bruce Miller, aged 26, of Christchurch.
The incident happened at 10.15pm as the man was trying to cross Lincoln Road on foot.
Police say initial inquiries indicate Miller and another person had been walking on Lincoln Road towards Moorhouse Avenue shortly after 10pm last night, when he attempted to cross the railway crossing.
Lights and bells were sounding at the time.
Miller was hit by the front of the train and was carried some distance down the railway line.
He was pronounced dead at the scene. The death has now been referred to the coroner.
