A heavily tattooed man appeared in Christchurch District Court on Wednesday charged over the mugging of 86-year-old Patricia Burrows in a Christchurch shopping mall three weeks ago.
The 35-year-old was charged with aggravated robbery, granted name suppression, and remanded in custody to reappear Thursday.
Detective Sergeant Ross Tarawhiti said police officers, including the armed offenders squad, arrested the man in Aranui about 6am on Wednesday.
He also faces dishonesty offences, including the theft of over $3000 worth of property and the attempted theft of a vehicle on December 4.
Mrs Burrows said news of the arrest was "the best Christmas present".
"The thought of him ever going past my house was absolutely awful - dreadful. I am relieved not only for myself, but the rest of the Christchurch girls - young or old," she told The Press.
"I am so thankful to the police. They have been absolutely wonderful. People should know how good they are."
Mrs Burrows remains in Princess Margaret Hospital recovering from a fractured pelvis she received in the attack at Barrington Mall on December 3.
However, she is expected to go home on Thursday in time to spend Christmas with her family.
