A man who allegedly swung a live rabbit at pedestrians in Auckland's downtown Queen St is due in court on Wednesday on a charge of animal cruelty.
Police say the man, 53, held the rabbit by its ears and swung it at pedestrians as he abused them.
Police were called by a security guard and when police arrived the man tried to hide the rabbit inside his shirt.
Police wrestled the rabbit from him, and the security guard held it as the man was handcuffed, the New Zealand Herald reported.
He is due to appear in Auckland District Court on Wednesday charged with cruelty to an animal, assaulting police and disorderly behaviour.
The SPCA named the rabbit Larry and inspector Vicki Border says he was checked by a veterinarian at Mangere headquarters, but appeared to have escaped uninjured although he was stressed.
