A 21-year-old man will appear in court on Friday morning after a gun was pulled on a police officer in Lower Hutt on Thursday.
A manhunt began about 9.30am after a man pointed a handgun at a woman police officer during a routine vehicle stop in Naenae.
He then fled on foot leaving behind his vehicle.
The search ended when a man voluntary turned himself in to the Lower Hutt police station shortly after 6pm, Inspector Geoff Gwyn says.
He has been charged with presenting a firearm at police and remanded in custody to appear in Lower Hutt District Court on Friday morning.
During the search armed offenders squad raided homes around the Hutt and Wellington regions and set up a cordon at Wellington Railway Station.
"It's been a worrying and long day for many people including the public, Lower Hutt police and the armed offenders squad," Gwyn says.
"We've put a lot of effort into background inquiries and searching addresses."
