A Palmerston North man has been taken to hospital after getting his leg stuck in a boat propeller.

The 58-year-old was surfacing from a dive in the Marlborough Sounds when his catch bag got caught on the moving propeller, dragging him into it.

The boat's skipper immediately put the boat into neutral but the man's leg was stuck.

Westpac rescue helicopter crewman Dave Greenberg says they were called to the scene just after 3.00pm on Thursday and treated the man, who'd suffered a serious injury to his leg.

The man was flown to Wellington Hospital.
