A man has been found seriously injured in central Wellington on Thursday morning.
Emergency services were called to Tory Street, between Cable and Wakefield Streets about 5.45am, central police communications shift commander Stephen Ross says.
The man was found unconscious and in a critical condition and has been taken to Wellington Hospital.
Wellington police say the man, in his early 20's, was the victim of an assault.
He is in a serious but stable condition in the hospital's emergency department.
Police are scanning CCTV footage to try to identify exactly what happened.
A police cordon is in place at the corner of Tory St and Courtenay Pl, blocking off about 15 metres of Tory St.
