Police are investigating how a man came to fall off the balcony of a flat in the Auckland suburb of Glen Innes on Wednesday night.
The man, in his 50s, is fighting for his life with head injuries in Auckland Hospital on Thursday morning.
Police on Wednesday night spoke to two other men at the flat and posted a guard on the property overnight.
A neighbour told The New Zealand Herald the flat's occupants were known to drink a lot and often argued.
The injured man may have been holding on before he fell head first on to the concrete below.
