Lion Rock at Piha Beach - Source: ONE News
A man has drowned in the sea at Piha, on Auckland's west coast.
The 25-year-old from India was part of a group of AUT students that had travelled to the beach, when they decided to climb Lion Rock.
Rajdeep apparently fell off the rock and into the sea, and since he was unable to swim, drowned, according to other students at the site.
But police say Rajdeep was swimming on his own, north of Lion Rock, outside of the patrolled area, when a member of the public noticed he was in difficulty and raised the alarm with surf lifeguards.
They were patrolling South Piha beach, where most people swim.
CPR was administered until a rescue helicopter arrived, but the man could not be revived.
The incident happened at 12.45pm.
It's the fifth drowning on Auckland's west coast beaches this season.
