A man has drowned in a river in North Canterbury.

Police say the man was swimming with his children in the Hurunui River south of Cheviot when they lost sight of him around 5pm Wednesday.

The Westpac Rescue helicopter was sent and four jet boats joined in the search.

The body of the man, aged in his 40s, was located just after 6pm about one kilometre downstream by a jet boat.

The family is receiving help from Victim Support.
