An elderly man has drowned at New Brighton in Christchurch.
Emergency services could not resuscitate the man after he was pulled out of the water near the New Brighton Pier on Wednesday morning.
A member of the public on the Pier noticed the man face down and attempts to resuscitate him weren't successful.
A police spokesman says he was dragged out and CPR was performed but he couldn't be revived.
He was a local man who biked to the beach every day before going for a swim.
It is the first drowning in Canterbury this year, but the 14th
person to drown in New Zealand waters this year.
