A man has been arrested after driving at speed on the wrong side of the new northern gateway tunnel.

Police apprehended the driver at Puhoi shortly after 8pm on Saturday night after receiving several complaints from motorists of a vehicle driving dangerously.

The vehicle drove through the Johnsons Hill Tunnel on the wrong side of the expressway against traffic. No southbound vehicles were hit by the vehicle.

A police highway patrol waiting on the north side of the tunnels stopped the vehicle after a short pursuit lasting less than a minute.

The driver faces charges of driving while forbidden and dangerous driving.

Police say they are relieved no one was injured "by this reckless act".
